Knowing When to Bend the Rules: A Guide for Small Business

By Jim Mikula, President/CEO

In the world of business, rules and regulations are essential for maintaining order and fairness. However, there are times when bending these rules can lead to innovation, foster relationships, or even help your community. As members of the Chamber of Commerce, it's important to navigate these situations thoughtfully. Here’s a guide on when it might be appropriate to bend the rules.

Understanding the Rules

Before considering bending any rules, ensure you fully understand them. What are the underlying principles? Who do they benefit? A thorough understanding allows you to assess whether bending a rule is justifiable or if it undermines its purpose.

Assessing the Context

Every situation is unique. Consider the context in which you find yourself. Are you facing a temporary challenge that could be alleviated by a small deviation? For instance, a local restaurant might need to adjust hours for a special event. If it enhances customer experience without causing long-term issues, it could be worth the deviation.

Evaluating Impact

Think about who will be affected by bending the rule. Will it benefit your customers, employees, or the community? If bending the rule serves a greater good, such as supporting a local charity or helping a struggling business, it may be worth considering.

Communicating Transparently

If you decide to bend a rule, communicate openly with stakeholders. Transparency fosters trust and understanding. Share the reasons behind your decision and be willing to explain how it aligns with your values or goals.

Learning from Experience

After bending a rule, take the time to evaluate the outcome. Did it achieve the intended effect? Were there any unforeseen consequences? Use this experience to inform future decisions. Each situation will provide valuable insights into the balance between flexibility and adherence to rules.

Seeking Guidance

When in doubt, seek advice from trusted colleagues or mentors. They may offer perspectives you hadn't considered or share experiences from their own journeys. The collective wisdom of your network can guide you in making thoughtful decisions

Bending the rules isn’t about disregarding them; it’s about understanding when flexibility can lead to positive outcomes. By approaching these situations with care and consideration, you can navigate the delicate balance between maintaining standards and adapting to meet the needs of your community. As local business leaders let’s strive to be both principled and adaptable in how we run our businesses.
